Web Master - A deprecated industry term

During the early days of new technology everyone struggles with terms that reflect the true meaning of how the feature is supposed to function.  Hence a plethora of Neologisms emerge as the developers are return with revisions of the vision. 

Then from there the marketing types seeking to create something with buzz that ends up on the printed media.  The programmers are rarely ahead of marketing who answer to sales who answer to the CEO that often is answering to investors.  During the Dot Com Boom of the nineties which one Venture Capitalist I've known since the early days coined the race to the Oklahoma Land Grab.  He was a find VC that was arrested for insider trading.   I think he made 10 million but somehow managed to keep all of it.

The web master term has been deprecated to Web Developer and Web Designer which then follows another layer of roles of Business Layer and Presentation Layer, respectively. 

The business layer person or team is the mechanic who builds the engine, operates it in a continuous processing environment known as 24/7 where they live on Java based fluids, operate in the dark, prefer not to be disturbed and are generally known to be quirky, nerdy and exceptionally bright, musical and intense.  Their personality prototype is "systems" whereas sales has is the outgoing.

My recollection of the term web master emerged way back in early nineties long before anyone realized that the web would truly be worldwide which by the way even Microsoft missed it as did Oracle but they smartly purchased Sun Microsystems.
